If you are in the process of selecting and purchasing commercial LED lighting, such as Area Lights, Flood Lights, or High Bays, you may have noticed that many products in this category are labeled as UL Listed. What does it mean for a LED lighting product to be UL Listed, and how does it affect your project?

What does it mean when a product is UL Listed?

A UL Listed label indicates that the product has undergone thorough safety testing by Underwriters Laboratories, a top Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), and has been certified as meeting the Underwriters Laboratories safety standards for that product category. Though the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) currently recognizes almost 20 NRTLs, Underwriters Laboratories is one of the most (if not the most) trusted and recognized, making UL the industry benchmark for safety certification in the United States.

Originally founded as a non-profit in 1894, Underwriters Laboratories has expanded to 64 laboratories with offices across 46 countries. The organization has been instrumental in establishing nationwide safety standards for commercial and consumer products, defining over 1,500 sets of proprietary safety standards for its independent testing and certification. After a product receives a UL certification, representatives from Underwriters Laboratories conduct periodic follow-up visits with the manufacturer, ensuring continued compliance with Underwriters Laboratories safety standards.

All GKOLED commercial LED lighting products are UL Listed, which is the Underwriters Laboratories certification for end products or complete components. Most of our products are UL Listed for Wet Locations, which means they may be safely used in areas where they may come in direct contact with water. This is especially important for lights that are used outdoors or in wet environments, such as Area Lights or High Bays. Information on specific product UL certifications may be found on the product spec sheets.

Why is it important to use UL Listed lighting products?

Why is it important that our LED fixtures are UL Listed? Almost all commercial building codes require that installed light fixtures carry a NRTL safety certification. By obtaining the UL Listed certification for our commercial LED products we ensure that our fixtures are compliant, and that their safety certification is readily accepted.

Additionally, though a UL Listed certification is an indication of safety, not quality, being UL Listed makes a lighting product eligible for DLC Standard and DLC Premium qualification by the Design Lights Consortium, one of the major organizations that help define the standards for quality in LED lighting. A DLC Standard or DLC Premium qualification indicates that a LED lighting product meets or exceeds the standards of quality set by the Design Lights Consortium and is a requirement for most utility rebate programs. In addition to being UL Listed, most of our commercial LED lighting products are either DLC Standard or DLC Premium qualified, ensuring eligibility for utility rebates.

In our 4-part series on determining the quality of a LED light fixture we have examined what you can tell from the manufacturer specifications, covering LED Chips, LED Drivers, and LED Lenses. However, you can also get an idea of the quality of the fixture by simply examining its housing – specifically, its Heat Sink and its Finish.

Heat Sinks

LED fixtures emit significantly less heat than other types of lighting, but they still emit a lot of heat internally, which impacts both the life of the components and the performance of the light. This is especially problematic for high power LED fixtures, such as area lights and high bays. An essential component of a LED fixture is the heat sink, which is designed to disperse the heat produced by the LED light.

Due to its cost-effectiveness and efficiency, aluminum is the most popular material for LED heat sinks. All GKOLED LED fixtures feature a sturdy, durable die-cast aluminum housing, ensuring effective heat dispersion and optimal LED performance. Cheaper fixtures may use less aluminum to reduce the cost of materials, or even use a plastic heat sink. If in doubt, check the weight of a LED fixture. A fixture that seems too light for its size may indicate that the manufacturer has tried to cut costs by skimping on materials for this important component.

Finish

When evaluating a LED fixture for a project, pay close attention to its finish, which should be completely smooth and uniform. The finish of a LED fixture has a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one, as painted heat sinks have been shown to perform better than unpainted ones. If the finish on a LED fixture is uneven, it can be an indication that the manufacturer is also cutting corners in other places during production.

We fully stand behind the quality of our fixtures. Because of this, we are offering a 30-day risk-free trial on any of our LED products, with all shipping costs covered by us. In our informative series on choosing quality LED lighting we have already discussed LED Chips and LED Drivers. Today we will dig into LED Lenses and what features help contribute to making a high quality LED light.

The lens of a LED fixture serves a twofold purpose: it focuses the light emitted by the LED chips and it shapes the light distribution. Therefore, choosing a LED light with the right lens is essential for projects with precise lighting requirements. In evaluating the lens, both materials and design should be considered to ensure the fixture in question is truly suitable for a specific LED lighting project.

If you regularly work on commercial lighting projects, you have probably encountered fixtures with lenses that have yellowed over time. A yellowed lens doesn’t just affect the appearance of the LED fixture – it also changes the fixture’s performance and the color of the light it produces. To prevent this problem, most GKOLED LED products use lenses made from optical-grade polycarbonate with UV stabilizers that resist yellowing. A top-tier material, polycarbonate is known for its high heat and impact resistance, and by using it we ensure continued high performance in our lenses, even in harsh weather conditions.

Equally important is the design of the lens, as it determines the light distribution of the LED fixture. Precise light distribution is essential for many commercial lighting projects, such as roadway lighting and parking lot lighting. However, many cheaper LED fixtures cut costs by reusing the same lens design across different products, despite different project requirements for these types of products. By contrast, GKOLED LED fixtures feature lenses precisely designed for specific light distribution. For select fixtures (Roadway Lights, Tier 1 Area Lights, Tier 2 Area Lights, Tier 1 Flat Flood Lights, Tier 2 Flat Flood Lights), we even offer a selection of different lenses with different light distributions, available upon request. This is one of many customizable options that GKOLED offers in order to meet the needs of your clients.

We are confident in the quality of our products and believe that once you have the opportunity to try out GKOLED fixtures, you will want to use them in your projects. This is why we are offering a risk-free 30-day trial of any of our lights, with shipping covered by us. As we continue our guide on how to choose a quality LED fixture, we will look at another crucial component of a LED light, the LED driver.

The LED driver provides a LED fixture with the correct power supply needed to ensure optimal performance. Many premature LED failures are the result of a failed driver, so choosing a LED fixture with a high-quality driver goes a long way to ensure reliable operation.

A good indication that a LED fixture contains a quality LED driver is a DLC Standard or DLC Premium designation from the Design Lights Consortium, one of the major organizations that help set the standards for high quality in LED lighting. As part of the DLC certification process, the LED driver in a product undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets strict performance requirements. Almost all GKOLED products are DLC Standard or DLC Premium listed, which means that our LED drivers meet or exceed the high standards for quality designated by the Design Lights Consortium.

Another good way to determine the quality of a LED driver is to check its Power Factor (PF). Rated on a scale from 0 to 1, the Power Factor of a driver indicates its efficiency, with a PF of 1 providing perfect efficiency and lower numbers indicating a large amount of wasted electricity. For LED fixtures, a PF of 0.9 (or 90%) is considered excellent. If the LED driver has a low Power Factor, it can indicate that the manufacturer has tried to cut costs on a fixture by using a low quality driver.

Power Factor is an important consideration for a successful commercial LED lighting project. Most utility companies charge by the wattage used by the LED light and not by the actual amount of electricity delivered, however, the extra electricity wasted by inefficient LED drivers with a low Power Factor still has to be generated and provided by the power plant. Because of this, some utility companies will apply a penalty charge for low Power Factor energy use, which will eat into the savings the commercial customer hopes to obtain by switching to LED lighting in the first place.

Additionally, because the Power Factor of a LED driver affects the amount of current drawn by the driver, it determines the number of fixtures that can be accommodated by an electrical setup. The lower the Power Factor, the fewer the amount of fixtures that can be installed. This makes low Power Factor LED drivers problematic for bigger commercial LED lighting projects requiring a large number of LED lights.

All GKOLED LED fixtures feature a driver with a Power Factor of 90% or greater. We use high end proprietary LED drivers or source from respectable manufacturers such as Inventronics to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability in our LED products.

If you look for LED lighting for a commercial or residential project, you will discover that the market is saturated with a bewildering array of options at different price points. It can be tempting to choose the LED fixture with the lowest price.  However, because the quality of LED lighting varies drastically across manufacturers, the cheapest LED fixture is not always the best deal. A cheap LED fixture can wind up with a higher price tag in the long run when energy savings, performance, maintenance, and in some cases, replacement cost are factored in. For a successful LED lighting project, it is important to carefully evaluate and compare the specifications of the LED fixtures you are considering, to ensure that you are truly getting good value for the money. In this blog series, we will discuss what to look for when selecting LED lighting, and the differences between high-quality and low-quality fixtures.

We will begin by examining LED chips and their effect on the performance of a LED light.

Responsible for converting electrical energy into light, LED chips determine both the color and the quality of the light produced by a LED fixture. Though there are many manufacturers of LED chips worldwide, not all LED chips are created equal, and there is a wide range in quality and performance across the market. The best LED chips are produced by prominent companies in the United States and Japan, as well as certain reputable manufacturers in China and South Korea.

Why is it important to choose LED fixtures that use high quality LED chips? During the manufacturing process, there are natural variations in light color, brightness, and voltage, even among LED chips from the same batch. Because of this, manufacturers sort LED chips into groups called “bins” based on their characteristics. The highest quality LED chips are placed in the tightest “bins”, ensuring that any differences between chips are so minimal as to be imperceptible. By choosing LED fixtures utilizing high quality LED chips, you ensure consistent LED performance across your LED lighting project, regardless of the project size.

In addition, high quality LED chips feature much better durability than their cheap counterparts. All LED chips experience some form of degradation in performance over time. In high quality LED chips, this decrease is so small as to be negligible, however, cheap LED chips can have degradation so extreme that the entire fixture needs to be replaced. Make sure to select fixtures with high quality LED chips to minimize the chance of additional costs being incurred down the line.

GKOLED LED lighting uses high quality LED chips from top-tier chip manufacturers Lumileds, Osram, and Cree. By sourcing LED chips from these reputable manufacturers, we ensure consistent, reliable color, performance, and durability in our products.

We are proud of the quality of our LED lighting and we want to give you the chance to test our product first-hand. This is why we offer a risk-free 30-day trial on any of our LED fixtures, no commitment required. Contact our Chicago-based sales team at 516-670-6888 or at will@jeelighting.com for more details!
